The 11th Annual National Farmworker Awareness Week took place March 28-April 3rd 2010 with additional events throughout the months of March & April. We are proud to say this year boasted over 100 events and participation from well over 25,000 farmworkers & allies across the USA with one action in Mexico! Read the full report.
In 23 states and 85 cities, we urged our campuses, communities, and decision-makers to think about where their food comes from with our slogan "Got Food? Thank a Farmworker." We demanded dignity & better working and living conditions, and celebrated the men, women, and children who provide the products we consume daily.
How we took action and raised awareness: Every year our organizers get more creative and innovative. 2010 was unprecedented with a diverse show of action through marches, film screenings, parties, demonstrations, discussions, workshops, speakers, concerts & performances, shared meals, award ceremonies, memorials & vigils, conferences, service days, gardening days, festivals & carnivals, health fairs, blood & marrow drives, food drives, misas, walk/run-a-thons, call-in actions, pilgrimages, galas, benefits & fundraisers to take action & raise awareness in honor of farmworkers!
"We believe that having Farmworker Awareness Week is important because it highlights the struggles of those who on the front lines of America's food chain. How can we as a country have faith in the quality of our food if the people who are responsible for getting it from the fields are mistreated, not allowed a voice or dignity on the job or treated as less than they are. Justice in the fields can only be achieved through all of us working together to demand it."
