Announcing SAF’s 20th Anniversary Recognition of 20 Alumni

In honor of Student Action with Farmworkers’ (SAF) 20th Anniversary (1992-2012), alumni are invited to apply for, nominate a fellow alumnus, or be nominated by a non-alumni for their commitment to social justice, with preference given to alumni who work in farmworker justice.

SAF prides itself on the initiation of over 700 young people into the farmworker movement.  This recognition showcases SAF’s commitment to honoring and supporting young people to become lifelong advocates of social justice. SAF will honor 20 alumni who have continued to be involved through their careers, community activism, philanthropy, or volunteering. Applicants or nominees should embody any or all of the following criteria currently or previously in the name of farmworkers or social justice: makes an outstanding contribution to their university or community, conducts advocacy, activism or organizing, demonstrates dedication and consistent service to SAF’s mission and cause through voluntary contribution in time, resources, energy, or support, and/or directly works with farmworkers and contributes to the betterment of the farmworker community.

As a part of our 20 year anniversary, we want to highlight the accomplishments of SAFistas, honor the legacy of SAF’s work, draw attention to the continued struggles of farmworkers, and continue to inspire all youth to become involved in the movement for farmworker justice. The University of Florida’s Samuel Proctor Oral History students will interview the selected alumni. Interviews will be used for online podcasts and compiled into a 20th anniversary publication.  Selected alumni will be announced through SAF’s list serves, website, social media, a press release, and at a public event.

Nominate yourself or another SAF alum for our 20th anniversary alumni recognition awards. Deadline is January 2, 2012.
