Overview
Through the Levante ("to raise up") Leadership Institute, SAF partners with other organizations across the state to hold North Carolina educational systems accountable to providing an equitable education to immigrant students. The Institute also enhances the organizing and leadership skills of middle, high school and out of school youth from farmworker families in Eastern North Carolina.
SAF also partners with the Adelante Education Coalition to advocate for access to Higher Education for all immigrants. Get involved here.
Program Details
SAF's youth development model involves creating a safe space for youth to talk about issues affecting them, while using creative means that foster school success, college preparation, and youth activism. Participants will attend 1 Orientation (Overnight), 1 Retreat (Overnight), and Leadership Trainings. Transportation will be provided IF NECESSARY.
Farmworker youth will participate in workshops on or about:
- Team Building
- Farmworker Issues
- Education Issues
- Theatre
- Community Organizing
- Documentary
- College Preparation
Eligibility
In order to participate in the Levante Leadership Institute you must be between the ages of 14-19 and come from a farmworking family in Harnett, Johnston, Sampson, and Wake counties in NC. Interested participants must submit a written application and audition for the program. Space is limited to 12 participants.
Definition of Farmworker Youth/Family
A youth who has a member of their family currently working in or recently worked in agriculture planting, cultivating, harvesting, or preparing crops for market or storage.
Responsibilities
Fully participate in and attend the entire orientation, retreat, rehearsals, monthly trainings, performances, and special events related to Levante/SAF.
