National Farmworker Awareness Week is happening now!
March 27 - April 2, 2011

Farmworker Awareness Week is a national week of action for students and community members to raise awareness about farmworker issues on our campuses and in our communities.

Why do we have farmworker awareness week?

  • Farmworkers feed the world- 85% of our fruits and vegetables are handpicked. We demand dignity for farmworkers!
  • Farm work is the third most dangerous job in the United States. We demand safe working conditions for farmworkers!
  • Farmworkers are treated differently under the law. We demand just living and working conditions for farmworkers and an end to unfair treatment under the law.

Contact Advocacy & Organizing Director Nadeen Bir for ideas on how to take action. Check out all the upcoming events in your area on our Farmworker Awareness Week website.

The Farmworker Awareness Campaign kicks off this week!

The Farmworker Awareness Campaign is SAF's peer-to-peer fundraising campaign to support our work for greater respect and justice for farmworkers. The Campaign kicks off with National Farmworker Awareness Week and ends May 20! Check out the campaign page and make a donation in support of one of our 32 fundraisers!

SAF receives $100,000 grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC Foundation!

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the BCBSNC Foundation is investing a total of $1 million in 10 nonprofit organizations across North Carolina. SAF Director Melinda Wiggins says,“The BCBSNC Foundation’s support allows us to further our impact, providing farmworkers with access to existing health care providers. Without their support, we could not do what we do today.” Through the grant, SAF will increase student and farmworker participation in the mission and activities of the organization through the development and delivery of culturally competent communication and administrative systems to improve health in agricultural communities across the state.
