About Us

The Farmworker Institute is a project of the NC Council of Churches’ Farmworker Ministry Committee, with a generous grant from the Duke Endowment. The Farmworker Ministry Committee is made up of a diverse group of advocacy organizations, representing a statewide collaboration dedicated to improving the working and living conditions of our state’s farmworkers. The following organizations are all members of the Farmworker Institute (listed in alphabetical order):

Catholic Diocese of Raleigh seeks to create a community of solidarity and support where all are welcomed and no one is unwanted, bringing peace, healing and justice to communities in which they minister with love, generosity and compassion to all.

Church Women United is a racially, culturally, theologically inclusive ecumenical Christian women’s movement, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice.

Eno River Unitarian Universalist Farm Worker Action Team

Episcopal Farmworker Ministry responds to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families, and actively supports opportunities for them to become self-directive.

Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) is a farm labor union that organizes for economic, legal and human rights for farmworkers. FLOC seeks to address the injustices of sub-minimum wages, exclusion from protective legislation, poor sanitation, health care and housing.

Farmworker Advocacy Network (FAN) is a network of organizations that advocates for improved living and working conditions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs) and their families in North Carolina. FAN member organizations identify problems and issues affecting the farmworker population; track farmworker-focused policy; monitor government and other agencies serving and/or enforcing regulations affecting farmworkers; and bring farmworkers' voices to the legislative process.

Legal Aid of North Carolina - Farmworker Unit, provides legal representation to farmworkers on a number of issues including, but not limited to, workers' compensation claims, lost wages, health and safety standards, retaliatory employment discrimination, and blacklisting. Legal Aid also conducts outreach to migrant labor camps and conducts community education on migrant issues.

National Farm Worker Ministry mobilizes the religious community to support farmworkers who are organizing for justice, empowerment and equality.

North Carolina Council of Churches’ Farmworker Ministry Committee works to improve conditions of farmworkers through public awareness, advocacy, service, support for organizing, and resolutions of endorsement.

North Carolina Council of Churches’ Housing Development Corporation

North Carolina Farmworker Health Program works with and through a statewide network of service providers to improve the health of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families in the state.

North Carolina Farmworkers' Project is a community-based organization dedicated to organizing migrant and seasonal farmworkers and developing farmworker leaders.

North Carolina Justice Center is North Carolina’s leading private, nonprofit anti-poverty organization. Its mission is to reduce and eliminate poverty in North Carolina by helping to ensure that every North Carolina household gains access to the resources, services and fair treatment that it needs in order to enjoy economic security.

Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) is a nonprofit organization that brings students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

Triangle Friends of the United Farm Workers is a Durham, NC-based volunteer organization dedicated to improving farm worker conditions by supporting the work of the United Farm Workers (AFL-CIO), the United Farm Workers of Washington State and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (AFL-CIO). Triangle Friends also advocates for better conditions for all farm workers.
