•ITF Theater Group•
The Levante Theater Group uses drama to initiate dialogue among farmworkers & the community. SAF began using theater to address farmworker issues in the summer of 1994. Past plays have included College: Me by Ruben Fuentes, adapted versions of No Saco Nada de la Escuela and Los Vendidos by Luis Valdez, and Una Cuenta de Esperanza by Ben Edwards. All plays are performed in Spanish or are bilingual (Spanish & English).
SAF’s Into the Fields interns wrote and performed a new play La Visíta del Campolín to inspire dialogue and action among farmworkers. The Campolín character is a play on El Chapulín Colorado-a popular TV superhero in Mexico. Interns used popular theater techniques and participatory methods for getting farmworkers to talk about housing and health issues that concern them and ways to protect themselves from pesticide exposure. In addition to the performance, SAF provided dinner, spent time with workers and took polaroid photos with them as souvenirs. SAF alum Raul Granados, returned to assist with ITF this summer, using his degree in Theater Arts to direct the theater group. Read the report

Documentary stories have the power to bring attention to life experiences that might otherwise remain unnoticed or misunderstood, and to create a climate for change. The documentary projects and educational materials produced by SAF seek to examine and honor the lives of immigrant farmworkers by sharing them within the broader English and Spanish-speaking community.

•Documentary Projects•
Since 1999, SAF has been documenting the cultural traditions and skills of immigrant farmworkers in North and South Carolina. The projects have focused on farmworkers' crafts, foodways, dance, healing, religious rituals, celebrations, songs, and work culture. Through past documentary projects, farmworkers have conveyed their desire to connect with their country of origin and also a need to share their traditions with communities in the U.S. Their isolation often hindered access to needed resources and connections, so they appreciated the opportunity to share their traditions and stories with SAF interns.
