Position Summary: The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) is seeking a communications manager for its Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (Full Frame) to assist with graphic design, social media, and general marketing and communications support for Full Frame. The marketing department is responsible for the overall marketing and public relations duties for Full Frame, a program of CDS. The department develops, plans, and implements all marketing, outreach, communications, visibility, press, and public relations activities for Full Frame. It is responsible for the brand (design + execution) for Full Frame, including all print and online media, signage, merchandise, video, and collateral. The communications manager reports to the Full Frame marketing director.

The ideal candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work under tight deadlines with input from multiple stakeholders; an extensive knowledge of visual communication techniques, and a working knowledge of and facility with social media platforms and analytic tools. Candidates must possess demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Knowledge of documentary and independent film is helpful, but a sincere interest in the field, and a willingness to educate oneself, is mandatory. The ideal candidate must also have a high attention to detail, strong organizational skills, ability to work well on multiple overlapping projects and deadlines, have strong interpersonal communication skills, and a willingness and ability to jump between tasks on short notice.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design print ready ads, web graphics, promotional materials for Full Frame development and fundraising activities (including graphics for holiday and year-end giving campaigns), visual collateral (including preshow slides, graphics and promotional posters for the festival and year- round programming), and graphic elements for the Duke University Box Office for pass and ticket holders.
  • Research, draft, schedule, and publish content across all of Full Frame’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo, Flickr) and website in accordance with the voice and brand of the organization. Compile raw web data into monthly reports for review and analysis by marketing director.
  • Assist in the creation of content for all e-newsletters, and in scheduling, planning, and distribution. Design and maintain templates and distribution lists.
  • Provide outreach to communities where documentary arts are not well known, to develop new communications channels, audiences, and potential sponsors.
  • Design merchandise and giveaways, including Speakeasy collectible, volunteer T-shirts, and festival tote bags.
  • Assist in the creation and printing of brand elements including signage, banners, on-screen visibility, promotional materials, posters, press backdrops, the seating music playlist for the festival (including Speakeasy panels) and year-round events.
  • Provide support for the creation of the festival program in adherence with the Full Frame style guide and communication strategy. Compile and track sponsor ads for the program, adhering to deadlines and specifications in collaboration with the programming and development teams, and prepare film images for festival program book and website.
  • Coordinate media management for photo and video assets, including archiving and backing up content, uploading to Flickr, and maintaining asset organization.

Skills/Software: Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, and Lightroom), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), social media scheduling platforms (such as Tweetdeck, Buffer, or Hootsuite), Wordpress. HTML is desirable.

Experience: Work generally requires 3-5 years of experience and knowledge with general marketing and communications work, graphic design, and social media. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
